Ecctis compared the MLWSP to grade 10-12 programs and diploma standards in the UK, Canada (British Columbia), and the United States (New York).

, “This is great news for Maple Leaf’s World School Program (MLWSP). This significant ECCTIS benchmarking result is another verification of that which universities around the world have recognized, that MLWSP high school graduates are well prepared for entrance into the world’s quality universities. The MLWSP is being recognized globally as a high standard program, like IB or Cambridge. Of the 1,145 grade 12 MLWSP graduates in June 2023, one hundred percent received university admission letters, and approximately eighty percent were accepted into the top 100 QS-ranked universities in the world.”

“Ecctis’s positive benchmarking of the MLWSP provides another high-level, independent verification of the quality standards of the MLWSP. Unlike other educational programs, the MLWSP is unique as an English language curriculum designed for students whose first language is not English and home culture is not western enabling them to reach high international standards and graduate from grade 12 with a comparable diploma as students in the UK, Canada, and United States. This opens a world of opportunity for MLWSP graduates to enter high quality universities around the world. The uniqueness of the MLWSP and success of its graduates will also generate interest in the MLWSP in many non-English, non-Western countries worldwide.”

As the only international curriculum with Chinese characteristics and Oriental culture in the world, Maple Leaf has built an information service system (i.e. "MLES-SIS") to serve the students of the Maple Leaf World School Program (MLWSP), in order to meet the demand for standardized information management of graduates, and at the same time to improve the information support services of the MLWSP.

We have developed the system to be full-featured and easy-to-use, which ensures effective management of graduate information and provides support for MLWSP students.

Through information technology, the MLES-SIS will achieve comprehensive and optimized management of graduate information. Graduate information certified by Maple Leaf will be stored and maintained on Maple Leaf's own servers, providing comprehensive data support and services to universities, students, parents and third parties worldwide.

The system is already officially online and the MLES website is the only official access point for external requests for Maple Leaf graduate information. Universities, graduates and other external individuals and organizations can access the official Maple Leaf website (https://www.mapleleaf.cn/) to remotely request, authenticate, download and print student transcripts and diplomas.

The MLES-SIS was developed to ensure the authenticity and validity of information such as Maple Leaf diplomas and transcripts, as well as the credibility of MLWSP students' grades.

In May 2022, Cognia conducted a comprehensive inspection (Accreditation Engagement Review) of Maple Leaf Educational Systems and all its schools and educational services, including all Maple Leaf high schools in China using the Cognia-endorsed and validated Maple Leaf World School Curriculum. The Accreditation Engagement Review was highly successful, as can be seen from the following summary quote taken from the introduction of the Cognia Report:

“Cognia’s review of all components of Maple Leaf’s global educational systems has resulted in an exceptionally strong and successful report. In fact, the review of Maple Leaf Educational Systems represents the largest independent school systems that achieved one of the highest overall scores of any system Cognia has ever reviewed and accredited through out the world.”

The Maple Leaf Educational Systems extensive accreditation review involved 25 experienced evaluators, including senior leadership of Cognia. The overall Index of Educational Score (IEQ) awarded Maple Leaf Educational Systems was 370 out of a possible 400, which is substantially higher than the average range of Cognia IEQ accreditation scores granted over the past five years of 278-283.

Dr. Sherman Jen, MLES Chair and CEO, states, “This very strong and highly successful external review of all Maple Leaf’s educational systems, schools, and programs is most encouraging and timely. As Maple Leaf plans to move forward with more online options and educational services, receiving such a positive report and high IEQ score from the world’s largest school accrediting body is most reassuring. It provides us with professional reassurance that our foundation is strong and that we can now proceed to build with confidence upon it.”

Cognia is the united organization of three of the six school accreditation commissions recognized by the United States national government, i.e., the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI). It is the world’s largest school accrediting body and international education community, accrediting and serving 36,000 + schools in more than 90 countries.

Dr. Sherman Jen was born and raised in China. He later moved to Vancouver, Canada. While living in Canada, Sherman developed the idea of an educational system that would blend the best of the educational model he saw in Canada with the strengths and cultural richness that he knew from the Chinese educational system. With this idea in mind, to blend the best of East and West in education, he returned to China in 1994 and establish his first school in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China in 1995. He was the first to integrate a western and Chinese program in China’s K-12 educational system. The Dalian School opened with 14 students. Maple Leaf Educational Systems has now expanded to more than 110 schools and 40,000 students in more than 20 cities across China and schools in Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Dr. Sherman Jen’s vision, diplomacy, and unwavering dedication to blend the best of East and West in education has been foundational to Maple Leaf’s remarkable success.

Literacy is a foundational skill that students at MLFNS-Wuhan are consistently practicing throughout the year. Reading. Writing. Speaking. Listening. In fact, all of our students have the opportunity to learn both English and Mandarin on a daily basis.

In early December, the school hosted its once-a-term Readathon event in which students could spend the entire day reading, writing, and playing literacy games.

Students won raffle tickets throughout the day for their efforts, and had the opportunity to win special book-related prizes at the end of the day!

In addition, through this event, the students raised over 1500 rmb in donations for a local charity in Wuhan. Great work FNS students!

Maple Leaf Foreign Nationals’ School – Wuhan (MLFNS-Wuhan) has continued its tradition of school-based “Houses”. These Houses are a major part of our efforts to build community throughout the school.

This year, we have re-branded to the following teams:

FNS Intramurals are set-up throughout the year, with teams competing against each other.

FNS House Days are student-led, challenge-based days. Students are led by team captains through a number of theme-based challenges with final products showcased at the end of the day in a school-wide assembly.

Each year, teaching excellence is recognized across Maple Leaf with the Superintendent’s Award. This award is handed out annually to educators within Maple Leaf that have demonstrated exceptional educational practices. Teachers are nominated by their schools based on criteria that include: classroom pedagogy, positive student relationships, impacts of learning, innovation, and contribution to school community.

This past year we had two recipients of this esteemed award: Mr. James McNamara and Ms. JungA Kim.

“Mr. James” has been actively involved in the development of our downtown students for the past two years and has impacted all levels of learning. His presence has been most notable in our Pre-Kindergarten cohort where he has used his excellent Mandarin skills to help bridge understanding for new language learners and accelerate English spoken language and literacy for our youngest students. Mr. James is back again with us this year as our Grade 2/3 Homeroom teacher at our Downtown Campus. Congratulations Mr. James!

Ms. JungA Kim has been with Maple Leaf since 2017 and MLFNS since 2019. She has had an incredible impact on our Middle School students and has been a huge driver behind our student council. Ms. Kim’s presence has allowed students to develop strong academic written language skills that have allowed MLFNS graduates to place at the top of the system-wide Maple Leaf English Language Test that is used for High School entrance and placement into our World School program. Ms. Kim has returned home to be with family this year, but she is still maintaining a connection to the Maple Leaf family as an online teacher. Congratulations to Ms. Kim!

Each year, MLFNS is credited for outstanding teaching. We have established designed mentorship programs for incoming teachers to ensure quality of instruction and fidelity. Our school has developed a reputation for excellence in instructional planning and practice that has been recognized by the BC Ministry Inspection Teams with multiple commendations. These programs help us create legacy teaching practices at our school that ensure that students are receiving excellent educational instruction year over year.

Teacher-student Communication in 10 minutes

After the school’s online course was launched, she offered to give the students in her class one-on-one oral communication via QQ. Soon she joined the class QQ group and set up different time periods to let the students register according to the time periods. When the students registered the oral communication schedule, she had more than 300 messages to deal with and reply to when her QQ was at its peak, but she did not feel burdened at all. Once, she finished communicating with a parent at about 2 o ‘clock in the evening. She said, “well, I’m really excited because I miss my students.”

The students definitely enjoy the individual attention. They are able to be their best at their own space, without the fear of being ridiculed by their peers. It’s important that the students feel relaxed and comfortable when they are speaking to Lucia, so she allows them the choose video or audio to call on the scheduled day.

By the text comments before and after the speaking sessions, we can tell that the students really appreciate the opportunity to speak on an one-to-one bases. Teacher’s and students’ love between each other is deeply involved in the short 10 minutes.

On November 19, 2020 five senior students from Maple Leaf Foreign National School Dalian participated in the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest (CIMC), hosted by the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario.

The CIMC is designed to give students up to Grade 10 an opportunity to develop and show their mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Shoan Cooper, Zuri Qu, Adrian Wan, Samhita Bhuvanagiri and Jayden Kim challenged themselves by participating in this year’s contest. This was a two-hour exam, and students had to work out 9 questions during that time.

Students are eagerly awaiting their results, which will be released next week. We plan to write several more math contests throughout the school year.

MLFNS-Dalian Shines at Model United Nations

We sometimes say that our classrooms are like a mini-United Nations, and in December we proved that it’s true! On December 4 and 5, eleven students from Grades 8 and 9 travelled to Maple Leaf International School – Dalian to participate in a Model United Nations conference with high school students. Model United Nations is an academic activity, where students discuss important issues that affect every nation in our world.

Our students represented the perspectives of different countries in the World Health Organization and the General Assembly to reach agreements on different world issues, such as dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, helping refugees fleeing from conflict zones and black market drugs and medication.

This was the first conference for all of our students, and they did an amazing job! Our students had prepared for several weeks in our Language Arts classes, and very quickly realized they had the confidence to stand up and share their opinions with the room.

This kind of activity has students using many of our Core Competencies, such as critical thinking and communication, while they try to find solutions to these issues. As students talk about these problems and learn more about current events, they also become more informed citizens.

Grade 8 student Zuri Qu was recognized with an individual Outstanding Delegate award for her hard work and contributions. Her chair noted that she volunteered to be the main speaker for her group’s resolution, despite it being her very first conference. We congratulate her for this wonderful achievement!

In all, the following students participated and were amazing ambassadors for Maple Leaf F.N.S. Dalian :
• Jayden Kim

Dr. Narula demonstrated to students how

electricity could be conducted through a variety of common materials, such as the graphite from pencils and fruit and vegetables. He also gave a lecture on safety when using electricity and why it is important to have an understanding of it before doing any experimentation.

During the 90-minute workshop, students had time to experiment with their circuits; some students built functioning pianos made from pencil graphite drawn on paper.

Other groups demonstrated that video game controllers could be made and activated with modelling clay, while others experimented with fruit and vegetables to test conductivity.

Creativity was on display as students played with and tested their circuit boards and other materials to discover what they could do. Students had a lot of fun developing new ideas and problem solving skills during this activity.

MLES and MLFNS-Dalian thank Dr. Narula for giving his time to help students better understand concepts related to electricity.

There is a Canadian ESL teacher in Wuhan Maple Leaf: In order to help Grade 9 students successfully study in high school, he went to visit high school BC classes and learned about what skills that high school students need to master. He often stays at school and works during summer and winter vacations and finishes all the lesson plans and materials of the new semester, he even makes the workbook on his own. He used the weekend time to help and guide the students for the preparation of speech competition. He voluntarily stayed and helped to clean up after each GEP workshop. He is the “encyclopedia ” in bilingual teachers’ eyes. He voluntarily feeds the stray cats on campus… On this winter vacation, he stays on campus as usual and is making preparation for the new semester as usual.

This is an extraordinary winter holiday. It has been 23 days since the school winter holiday began on January 17, and it has been 17 days since Wuhan was closed. Everyone became more and more anxious, but he was positive and optimistic. Every time we talked with him, he said he was well protected and had enough food. As a Grade 9 teacher, he actively communicates with each bilingual teacher in the class, provides additional teaching resources, and undertakes the task of preparing lessons for some sections.

He responded to the school’s suggestion that the resident teacher go out shopping once a week. However, one day, when I received a photo from the director of general affairs, my heart tightened. I thought, why did Ted go out again? He had just been to the supermarket the day before yesterday. You know, Ted is 60 years old, and every time he goes out in these times, we worry about him. So I sent him a friendly reminder to try to go shopping only once a week. When I read Ted’s response, I smiled with relief and tears. It turned out that Ted was not shopping for himself, but for Lucia and her daughter. Lucia has just been here for less than half a year, with a nine-year-old daughter. She wanted to take advantage of the winter vacation to get familiar with Wuhan, but the epidemic took place. She was very nervous and had no means of transportation to go out for shopping. She has just been out one time for some basic stuff but no vegetables. Ted has a scooter and knows where to buy vegetables. In order to be safe, early in the morning, he went out of the door, went to a relatively partial supermarket. There were few people and basically no line on the checkout. He bought there and immediately went back to the school.

I didn’t ask Lucia whether her vegetables were tasty, but I thought they’d find the cold, long winter especially warm.
